Office Technology, 2014 April 07 2014

It's been a while since typewriters have been standard office equipment. They were made obsolete by word processing programs on PCs and documents printed on printers. Multiple copies required carbon paper and mistakes were time consuming and hard to fix. One could argue that they still work, but are they efficient and is there a better, less-costly way? ..........Your fax machine is next....there is just about no good reason not to switch to e-faxing. E-faxes are paperless, electronic documents in .pdf format. What not to like - you can save, delete, or put them in a folder, email them, copy or store them digitally for future reference, and it's all on your desktop, not around the corner and down the hall.

Most telcos and lots of third party vendors offer e-faxing and they price it depending on the number of received pages in a month. Your server is next.........

Make your next telephone system VoIP capable September 30 2013

Make your next telephone system VoIP capable (voice over IP),  especially if you have branch offices, home office workers, or a lot of international or long distance calling. Seamlessly centralize voicemail, and integrate your cell phone with your telephone system for converged communications. With a flat rate monthly account, one of the internet telephony service providers can provide SIP lines anywhere - without contracts and including domestic long distance. Remote workers only need a high speed internet connection to be plugged into the office system. You can often save enough to offset the price of the system. You just have to do the math – or we’ll help you do the math. A short analysis can help determine if a VoIP system would save you money. 90% of the inquiries about new telephone systems that we get are customers shopping for VoIP!

Reporting telephone troubles September 30 2013

Reporting a business telephone trouble….first things first. A little narrowing down of the symptoms will help whoever it is reported to. Is it a telephone line trouble that needs to be reported to the telephone company, or a telephone equipment trouble that needs to be reported to your telephone equipment vendor (DTEL)?

Here’s a couple of things you can do to isolate it and give us a more accurate report. If a telephone is dead or acting up, try moving it to another jack that is working. If the trouble follows the phone, it is most likely the phone that is bad.

If a line is dead or noisy, is it dead or noisy at all phones? If so, it could be a line trouble. Report it and have the telephone company test it (which they will do for free). Do not authorize a dispatch (which they will not do for free) if they tell you they think their line is good. If this occurs, you have effectively isolated the trouble; call DTEL and we’ll take it from there.

Start a “telephone” file January 16 2011

Start a “TELEPHONE” file, either paper or electronic, that the person responsible for the phone system can maintain. Nothing fancy – a printed copy in the equipment room is very handy – just some general configuration information for the phones and the voice mail, the telephone company you use, records of phone system software upgrades, expansions, moves, and changes, and warranty dates. This type of info can save a tech time by very quickly orienting them to your individual setup. DTEL techs can make back-up discs and thumb drives on most systems for disaster recovery also.

Back up power for your phone system January 16 2011

Back up power for your phone system is not only convenient when a thunderstorm rolls through, it also acts as a last layer of protection from surges, brownouts, and other minor power fluctuations and feeds a nice, clean 120v/60hz to your system. A UPS, or uninterruptibe power supply (also called a battery back-up) will extend the life of your system and protect it from “dirty” power. They do need the batteries changed out periodically – usually at 3 yr intervals, and the batteries are inexpensive.

Nortel goes bankrupt October 30 2009

Nortel Networks, Canadian maker of telephone central office switching equipment and telephone systems filed on January 14, 2009, and plans to restructure. They have lost $7 billion over the last three years and the company has shrunk dramatically, and is expected to be sold off pieces of the business. Immediate impact on Nortel phone system customers is unclear, but look for support and dealers to fade away over time. The secondary market may be a primary supply source from here on.

Captive Marketing September 30 2009

DTEL and Captive Marketing have come together to give your business the flexibility to entertain your callers with just plain on-hold music or use it as a chance to educate them about products, services, and web initiatives with customized messaging. Captive can set up an on-hold marketing program for your business.

DTEL’s Tech… gettin’ it done under pressure. May 30 2008

We responded to several of our customers on May 9th, 2008 as the result of the pre-dawn tornado that touched down in Gastonia that morning. On that day we restored service to approximately (8) of our customers, including rigging temporary emergency telephone and data drops for approximately (30)employees of Pathways, after their building sustained major structural damage to the south wing, and doing the same for Industrial Distribution Group in Belmont after they lost the roof of their warehouse. DTEL techs rigged data and telephone service at a temporary location for IDG and completed the job in (2) business days. Our techs worked overtime in difficult circumstances to restore service and were on the scene working within one hour of receiving the service call at both locations…..now that’s real customer service – and we’re gonna toot our horn about it a little bit!

Allworx bought by Paetec November 01 2007

Allworx, a maker of IP-based telephone systems with 1000 resellers in North America was bought by Paetec, a telephone services provider in late 2008. Allworx had been privately held. Paetec’s offerings dovetail with Allworx’s IP-based telephone systems. Allworx was featured in ‘Business Solutions’ magazine and their new phone models, and upgraded website. Check out the entire Allworx line, Allworx . DTEL is an authorized Allworx reseller as well as a Platinum Partner and member of the Allworx  Partners Advisory Council.
