DTEL is Gastonia’s first and largest telecom equipment dealer. Our firm was founded in 1984 by Bill Dover and A. J. Turnipseed, both Southern Bell retirees with over 30 years’ experience at the time.
In 1990 DTEL became a Comdial Associate Dealer, a Preferred Dealer in 1993, and a Preferred Gold Dealer in 1997. In 2002 DTEL became a Vodavi Infinite dealer, and subsequently an Allworx dealer in 2005. DTEL achieved the Allworx Apex Partner distinction in 2011 and Platinum status 2013. In 2016 DTEL became an NEC Solutions Provider and a registered ISP, providing SIP and hosted voice solutions.
In 1996 Charlie Peninger, Jr. purchased the company from Bill Dover, who remained in a support role until 2005.
Charlie is a multi-generation Gastonia native. His background includes 45+ years of telecommunications experience beginning with the U.S. Navy, serving as an interior communications electrician. He then spent 11 years with AT&T as a communications technician, and just prior to purchasing DTEL he was a telecommunications technician at UNC-Charlotte. Charlie is past president of the Rotary Club of Gastonia, a member of the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors, a member of American Legion Post #23, and a board member of Cornerstone Christian Center. He also sits on the board of TechWorks of Gaston County.
In 2019, Jim LaBrec purchased DTEL from Charlie. Jim holds a BA in Economics from Davidson College and has almost 30 years’ experience in the communications industry. Jim’s background includes sales leadership roles in the competitive long-distance industry with BTI Telecommunications and ITC Deltacom. He served as vice president of sales for both firms managing both direct sales teams across the Southeast as well as channel sales teams. Jim served on the integration team during the merger between BTI and ITC Deltacom and brought to market the newly deregulated services that resulted from the Telecommunications Act of 1996. During his tenure, he launched new markets in VA, NC, SC, TN, GA and FL for BTI, ITC Deltacom and Nuvox combined. In 2005 Jim founded his own firm, Converging Technologies Inc., which provided consulting and management for firms seeking to implement a channel sales organization. Eventually Jim partnered with One Source Communications, LLC out of Greenville, NC building market share throughout the nation providing Technology Expense Management for SMB to Enterprise-level companies.
